With the assistance of the Boston Preservation Alliance, a significant number of Boston's registered voters, mostly residents, property and business owners in Fort Point, have filed a petition with the Boston Landmarks Commission. The petition, supported by SAND, requests that the Landmarks Commission further study the potential designation of the Fort Point District as a Boston Landmark District -- a designation that will help recognize the area's important industrial past.

The purpose of such a designation, in addition to providing important recognition to Fort Point, is to help provide assistance in the rehabilitation and restoration of buildings that otherwise would neglected and subsequently targeted for demolition. Most recently, a Fort Point horse stable constructed in 1907 (shown above in 1999) was demolished to make way for a parking garage.
