Opinions were not based in fact

REGARDING THE July 7 editorial ''Fan Pier Pressure," which falsely implied facts or circumstances that are inaccurate or misleading about the Pritzker family and the Fan Pier:

First, the editorial said the Pritzkers ''consider the land over-encumbered with public amenities and infrastructure requirements." It goes on to suggest that there may be an effort or intent to ''renege on the deal."

These suggestions are false and not based in facts. Far from making any attempt to reduce or change requirements for development of this property, we have been consistent and clear in our intention to stand by all the environmental and cultural commitments we have made to the city of Boston and to ensure these requirements are assumed by any purchaser -- as the Editorial Board should have known by reading the Globe, which has reported that fact multiple times.

Second, the editorial falsely suggested that ''protracted litigation" has somehow been threatened against Boston in response to ''mayoral pressure." The suggestion that there is any litigation, much less ''protracted litigation," being contemplated is pure fiction.

Third, the editorial offered the opinion that the price for the development is too high. Ignored is the fact that tens of millions of dollars have already been incurred in acquiring the development rights, maintaining the environmental and cultural commitments, and putting the project together.

Most important, this is a private transaction, and the price will be set between the seller and the willing buyer. I would not presume to tell the Globe how much to charge for an issue of its newspaper. The Editorial Board has a right to its opinions, but it doesn't have the right to make it seem as if those opinions are based in fact when they are not.
